Almost every voter I spoke to in last year’s State election told me they found election propaganda in general, and how to vote cards in particular, intrusive and offensive and environmentally irresponsible. How to vote cards go straight in the bin. The voters are right, and I agree, so in an effort to minimise intrusion and environmental waste not only have I recycled my posters from the State election, but I have decided not to hand out how to vote cards on September 13.
Some may consider that politically risky but the strong message from the people is that it is time to put wasteful old election methods to bed and adopt a new approach. I actually think all political candidates should be allowed to place only 1 poster sized how to vote card outside each polling booth. That way anyone who needs to review on the day can do so at their convenience and without being bombarded with how to vote cards.
